About Us

Changing the World One Lesson at a Time

Social Studies School Service is a publisher and distributor of high-quality educational materials.

Through our family of innovative imprints and partners, we provide teachers and administrators with materials that promote critical thinking and informed action. We offer a wide range of products, from full curricula to supplementary resources.

As we grow and adapt to meet students’ evolving needs, we remain committed to helping educators give students the best possible social studies education.

A History of Mission-Driven Innovation

Since the 1960s, Social Studies School Service has been giving educators and students the tools they need to become informed, engaged citizens.

Our founders, Sandy Weiner and Irwin Levin, started distributing high-quality learning materials during the height of the civil rights movement. They wanted to help educators teach the next generation of world-changers. Today, this mission is at the heart of everything we do.

Reaching New Heights

Accomplishing our mission has forced us to explore new frontiers. Under the leadership of David Weiner and Aaron Willis, the company began publishing in the early 2000s and has since become a leading educational publisher. As a publisher, Social Studies School Service is a market leader in hands-on as well as digital learning, developing content under established imprints such as Nystrom and Interact.

Constant Evolution

The organization of Social Studies School Service has evolved as well. For half a century, we’ve adapted and expanded in an effort to accomplish our mission and meet the shifting needs of students and educators. Though we started as a distributor of supplemental products, we’re now a publishing and manufacturing institution with growing support for core curricula.

As the needs of teachers evolve, as students change, as technology progresses, as the classroom adapts, so will we. Wherever future world-changers are getting excited about social studies, that’s where you’ll find us.
