Students assume the roles of historical reformers—educational, social, religious, and political—who convene in Boston for a hypothetical meeting to address the day's concerns.
Playing luminaries such as Anthony, Dix, Douglass, Mann, and Thoreau, students research their characters in preparation for a moderated discussion of their signature issues, followed by an optional debriefing session on the underlying themes and strategies of reform movements. The teacher’s guide furnishes complete instructions, handouts, biographical sketches, background essays, extension activities, and assessments. The flexible lesson plan allows for the simulation to run for two to four class periods.
