As randomly chosen (or teacher-assigned) members of six groups (Native Americans, Jewish Americans, Irish Americans, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans), your students settle a new neighborhood where they learn about each other's cultures.
Participants move through four study/activity phases involving ethnic history, customs (dress, food, songs, holidays), literature, and a discrimination day where speaking to “different” people is not allowed. Activities culminate with a “friend’s festival”—an ideal way to include parents. Packaged in a three-ring binder, the simulation includes day-by-day directions, reading materials, photocopy masters, teaching tips, and extension ideas. Players: entire class. Time: 15 hours.
