World history is organized into five phases of human development called "waves": communal, agricultural, urban, modern, and global. Distinctive cultural patterns, referred to as "currents," are repeated in each wave, and the book’s eight chapters are built around these waves and currents. Each chapter also includes "Questions to Consider" and "Insights" meant to spur critical thinking. Numerous photos, charts, and graphics heighten understanding of the ideas being presented.
