Professional Learning Menu Offerings
We offer a menu of professional learning opportunities that address key areas and topics in education today. Sessions are developed using a social studies lens and may incorporate Social Studies School Service resources where appropriate. The following are some examples of what we offer.
Plan Practice Teach
What comes first – lesson plans or instructional resources? Instructional resources are important!
However, if teachers don’t have a solid plan for how to use these resources, then the lesson falls flat. In this session, participants will engage in a planning protocol to develop individual and personalized plans to meet the needs of their diverse learners. Participants will leave with plans to ensure student mastery using Social Studies School Service resources.
Formative Assessment in
Social Studies
Formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course. Checking for understanding is part of an entire system of formative assessment. In this session, participants will learn various methods and strategies that allow teachers to listen in, question, and use student work to make the best use of instructional time that impacts student achievement.
The Ideal Elementary Self-Contained Classroom
Let’s be real – sometimes social studies instruction becomes “one more thing” in elementary classrooms. But this does not need to be the case! In this session, participants will investigate ways to use social studies as the vehicle to support student learning in a self-contained elementary classroom. Explore how Social Studies School Service resources can be the vehicle to develop mini lessons that foster language development and foundational skills.
